Thompson Named Mission Area Executive for National Security Analysis at Johns Hopkins APL
Angela Thompson has been appointed National Security Analysis mission area executive at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland.
Thompson joined the Laboratory in 2007 and most recently served as APL’s deputy mission area executive for Cyber Operations. In that role, she directed the strategic execution of programs advancing U.S. capabilities in intelligence operations; nuclear command, control and communications; and critical infrastructure resilience. She also oversaw the development of advanced solutions in generative artificial intelligence, secure computing and active defense, guiding teams to deliver impactful capabilities that addressed evolving national security threats.
Earlier in her career, Thompson served in a series of technical and leadership positions, including systems engineer, technical group supervisor and program area manager. She also helped to establish and lead what later became APL’s Cyber Operations and Intelligence Program Area, cultivating key partnerships with the Department of Defense cyber community. Under her leadership, the program area grew from exploratory studies to fully transitioned programs, supporting high-priority national missions.
“Angela’s demonstrated success as a strategic leader and strong technical contributions have positioned her to create lasting impact for APL,” said Jim Miller, assistant director for policy and analysis at APL, who oversees the National Security Analysis Department. “We are fortunate to have a leader with her vision and ability taking on this critical role leading the mission area.”
Thompson holds a master’s degree in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University.
