Johns Hopkins APL Again Honored With Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award for Best Places to Work

For the second year in a row, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, was honored with a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award as one of the top 100 Best Places to Work among large U.S. companies. Glassdoor awards are based solely on feedback from employees who voluntarily and anonymously share insights and opinions about their work environments by writing reviews. APL ranked No. 42 on the list this year, marking the second year in a row that the Laboratory has been in the top 50.

APL’s rating accounts for all current and former employee feedback posted to the Glassdoor site from Oct. 19, 2021, to Oct. 17, 2022 — a time that Glassdoor categorized as a period of “extreme highs and lows for job seekers and employees,” adding that its data “shows there are still companies hyper-focused on creating outstanding employee experiences.”

“It is great that our people are so positive about the Lab,” said APL Director Ralph Semmel. “In essence, this award reflects their achievements, creativity and innovation, as well as the strength of the dynamic organization we continue to build that lets us effectively tackle the most critical challenges facing our nation.”

“We want to thank our staff members — current and former — who took the time to share their experiences and insights,” said Aili Kujawa, head of APL’s Talent Services Department and the Laboratory’s chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer. “This award shows us that they believe in and support APL’s core values and our commitment to fostering a diverse workplace that values not only excellence, but also inclusion, equity and respect.”

During the yearlong eligibility period, employers considered for the large-company list (companies with more than 1,000 employees) must have received at least 75 ratings for each of the nine workplace attributes (overall company rating, career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, diversity and inclusion, senior management, work-life balance, recommend to a friend and six-month business outlook) included in the awards algorithm. Glassdoor compiles the final list using its proprietary algorithm and takes into account quantity, quality and consistency of reviews. The company’s complete awards methodology can be found here.
