Former Vice President and Senior Counsel of Hilton Hotel Brands Ama Romaine has joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as general counsel and supervisor of the Office of Counsel.

Romaine has worked as a legal advisor in the hospitality, financial services, energy and project finance industries, most recently as the legal lead for the Brands, Commercial Services and Corporate Communications departments at Hilton Worldwide — where she led teams that negotiated a broad range of commercial agreements, handled consumer protection regulatory matters and managed the company’s extensive, international intellectual property portfolio.

“I was drawn to APL because of its focus on innovation, as I believe real innovation lies at the epicenter of our future,” Romaine said. “I am excited to be a part of an organization that is committed to developing life-changing innovations that keep our nation safe and have a meaningful impact on the world.”

Romaine has a B.A. in humanities from York University, Toronto, and a J.D. from Howard University School of Law. A member of the bar in New York and D.C., Romaine has served on boards for the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the Women’s Bar Association Foundation. She is also a member of the D.C. advisory council of the Tahirih Justice Institute, a national nonprofit that provides legal and educational services to protect female immigrants fleeing violence.
