APL is applying its expertise in lunar science and technology to a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency initiative to identify and propose interoperating standards for commercial infrastructure on the Moon.

In the past five years, nearly 17,000 Maryland students have participated in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs at APL — including high numbers of minority and female students, who are often underrepresented in STEM fields.

Nelli Mosavi-Hoyer, APL’s project manager for NASA’s EZIE and Van Allen Probes missions, was recognized with Women in Aerospace’s 2023 Aerospace Awareness Award for her leadership and outreach efforts.

Floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Sherry Chen looked out over the 1,000-foot deck as two F-18 fighter jets revved for take-off. Over the course of a five-day embarkation on an aircraft carrier, Chen gained valuable insights into the technology she helps develop for Navy sailors.

NASA has announced the selection of four mission concepts for further consideration as part of its Heliophysics Small Explorers (SMEX) program. Among those advanced is a CubeSat constellation called CINEMA, short for Cross-Scale Investigation of Earth’s Magnetotail and Aurora, for which APL would play a leading role.

By applying algorithmic approaches used to help robots navigate terrain and perform tasks, scientists at Johns Hopkins APL are enabling the military to automate key facets of tactical decision-making, ensuring the U.S. can maintain its competitive edge well into the future.

Johns Hopkins APL scientists are working to advance our understanding of the glymphatic system — an under-studied waste clearance system for the brain — and the role it plays in sleep, memory consolidation, degenerative illnesses and more.

APL has forged a new partnership with the Space Systems Command to evaluate ground systems being designed for a new classified satellite network. The Lab will help ensure the government is using best software and cybersecurity practices while prototyping and demonstrating the new ground system.

Last fall, the world watched as the DART spacecraft — the Double Asteroid Redirection Test — guided itself toward the asteroid Dimorphos for a direct collision, a major technical achievement and the first successful planetary defense test in history. As a part of NASA’s overall planetary defense strategy, DART’s impact with the asteroid Dimorphos demonstrated a viable mitigation technique for protecting the planet from an Earth-bound asteroid, if one were discovered.
