Timothy Lippa

Dr. Timothy P. Lippa is the mission area executive for Global Health at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). In this role, he leads strategic planning and execution of programs addressing critical health threats to the warfighter and homeland. Partnering with sponsors across the Department of War and key agencies, the mission area applies technical expertise to anticipate, detect, characterize, prevent, and mitigate complex and emerging threats to human health and operational effectiveness. This work strengthens force readiness, optimization, and survivability while protecting people and communities in the United States from acute threats. Dr. Lippa was previously acting head of APL’s Electromagnetic Sensing Systems Branch and head of the Physical and Life Systems Branch. He has led research and development efforts that conceived, developed, and transitioned chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) sensing and detection capabilities, while also creating advanced test and evaluation capabilities to support their maturation and deployment. Dr. Lippa joined APL in 2003 and is a member of APL’s Principal Professional Staff. He holds a doctoral and master’s degree in chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University as well as a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Loyola University Maryland.
