BioSteve Krein is the acting mission area executive, as well as the deputy mission area executive, for Civil Space Flight within the Space Exploration Sector of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). He oversees the mission area’s technical and scientific staff and is responsible for the performance and quality of its sponsor-directed missions, its technical products and services, and promoting a work environment that fosters innovation while delivering on cost and within schedule. Krein previously spent 35+ years in the commercial space industry, most recently at Northrop Grumman, where he maintained full profit and loss and operating responsibility for a global space business portfolio. Since coming to APL, he has embraced the challenge of driving collaboration between the commercial space industry and the Laboratory and has made national and strategic impact with mission support of NASA’s goal of a next-generation lunar terrain vehicle, cargo transport operations into space for resupply of the international space station, and innovative approaches to the Human Landing System for lunar exploration. Krein has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University and an M.S. in systems engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, and he studied corporate finance, strategy, and execution at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School.
