Bio
BioDr. Glenn Mason’s research work is experimental investigations in the field of naturally occurring space radiation. This includes solar energetic particle composition, the acceleration and transport of particles in the solar corona, the interplanetary medium, and Earth’s magnetosphere, as well as galactic cosmic rays. He has developed novel spaceflight instruments that allow determination of the mass composition of solar and interplanetary particles in previously unexplored energy ranges. He is a co-investigator on energetic particle instruments for the European Space Agency (ESA)/NASA Solar Orbiter mission that launched in 2020, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission that launched in 2006, the NASA Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission that launched in 1997, and the Wind mission. Dr. Mason was principal investigator for NASA’s Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) mission. He has served on numerous advisory committees including the NASA Living With a Star Targeted Research & Technology steering committee (chair, 2012), the ESA/NASA Joint Science and Technology Definition Team for Solar Orbiter/Sentinels, the NASA Space Science Advisory Committee (SScAC), the Living With a Star Science Architecture Team (chair), the Sun Earth Connections Advisory Subcommittee (chair), and the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP).
