BioBenjamin Gien is a modeling and simulation analyst in the National Security Analysis Department at APL, where he applies his expertise in novel modeling and simulation techniques to drive innovation in national security analysis. Since joining the Laboratory in 2024, Gien has focused on the development and applications of large language models in the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM). Before joining APL, Gien worked at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), where he pioneered the use of reinforcement learning in the discovery of tactics, techniques, and procedures for directed energy concept weapons. Additionally, Gien served in the U.S. Army as an enlisted tank crewman, providing him with a unique understanding of the operational challenges and complexities of military operations. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Rochester.
