Bio
BioAthanasios Kouloumvakos is a senior solar physicist in the Solar and Space Physics Group within APL’s Space Exploration Sector. His research work is focused on solar and space physics, solar radio-physics, and space weather. His main research interests include the properties of shock waves in the solar corona and interplanetary space, the properties of solar energetic particles and connections with remote sensing observations, the acceleration and transport of high-energy particles in the solar corona and the interplanetary medium, and the composition of solar energetic particles. He is also the principal investigator of several research grants for NASA. He is co-investigator for the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) instrument suite on board the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter spacecraft and instrument scientist for the Energetic Particle Instrument-Low energy (EPI-Lo) instrument on board NASA’s Parker Solar Probe spacecraft. He has served as a reviewer and panelist for proposals submitted to NASA’s Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) solicitations. He is the first author of over 14 and the coauthor of over 80 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers.
