BioMartin Sommerville is the managing executive for the Force Projection Sector at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), leading an organization of approximately 1,600 staff members dedicated to advancing critical national security capabilities. He is responsible for developing enterprise-level technical strategy, fostering innovation, and cultivating the talent required to deliver high-impact solutions for Laboratory sponsors. Mr. Sommerville oversees capabilities supporting crewed and uncrewed undersea, surface, and air platforms, as well as sea- and land-based strategic deterrent systems. He emphasizes aligning cross-functional teams with sponsor priorities and APL’s long-term focus on delivering enduring, game-changing mission impact. A recognized technical leader in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), Mr. Sommerville previously served as Flight Systems Branch supervisor and as the sector’s rotational deputy managing executive. He is committed to building enduring partnerships across government, industry, and academia to leverage emerging and dual-use technologies that strengthen the nation’s security. Mr. Sommerville earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Marquette University and an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Ohio State University.
