BioBobby Armiger is the managing executive for the Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). In this role, he leads the REDD technical line organization responsible for pioneering research with mission intent and exploratory development for mission impact, with an aim to accelerate transformative innovation and invent the future for APL. Previously, Mr. Armiger led REDD’s Exploratory Science Branch, which performs research and development in the areas of material sciences, physics, biological sciences, human performance and biomechanics, chemical sciences, and electronic materials and microsystems, in order to enable APL’s future missions. His research portfolio encompasses computer and robotic assisted surgical systems, neuroprosthetic technologies for restoring function to wounded warfighters, and modeling and simulation to understand and mitigate traumatic injury. Mr. Armiger is a member of APL’s Principal Professional Staff. He has six patents and more than 90 publications and was the recipient of a 2023 R&D 100 Award for “Wearable Thermoelectric Cooling Device for Prosthetics.” He has an M.S. in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech.
