APL collaborates with the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering to sponsor graduate programs at Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals (EP). EP offers part-time and online graduate courses leading to master’s degrees, graduate certificates, and post-master’s certificates in 22 program areas. To accommodate full-time working professionals, classes are offered online, on weekday evenings at APL, and at other sites in the Baltimore/Washington metro area. Courses are designed to meet the needs of both students and employers, with new programs created in collaboration with local industry leaders to keep pace with technology and the marketplace.
EP currently offers 22 degree programs: Applied and Computational Mathematics, Applied Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics, Artificial Intelligence, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, Environmental Planning and Management, Financial Mathematics, Healthcare Systems Engineering, Information Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, Space Systems Engineering, and Systems Engineering. Additional online courses continue to be developed each year.
For more information, please visit the EP website.
APL continues to play a critical role in the development of the programs at EP, which had its origins as an in-house program for the advanced training of APL employees. Over the years, it has grown and been opened to the public, with up to 90% of the students coming from outside of APL. The faculty comprises scientists and engineers from APL and the Whiting School of Engineering; from regional aerospace, engineering, and information technology companies; and from government agencies. EP faculty are actively practicing what they teach, and a number of them have written textbooks that are widely used in their respective fields.
EP offers master’s degrees in 22 areas. Twelve of these programs are based at APL and chaired by APL Principal Professional Staff (APL’s top technical and administrative staff):
In addition to the 12 APL-based programs listed above, EP offers courses and degrees in 10 other areas:
The APL Education Center supports and administers the EP programs on the APL campus. The Education Center office is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students and prospective students may contact the office directly:
Classrooms and laboratories are located in the Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center and in the Montpelier 7 Building.
APL employees who take courses at EP receive tuition remission. (See Benefits for details.)
