ISC Develops AI to Tackle Climate Tipping-point Modeling

Jennifer Sleeman and a team of researchers from APL and JHU are working at the intersection of AI and climate tipping point discovery as part of the DARPA AI-assisted Climate Tipping-point Modeling program. Taking on an important climate tipping point use case, the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the team is using large ocean circulation

models, deep learning, and neuro-symbolic representations to build general machinery that is able to predict conditions that may lead to a collapse of the AMOC. A collapse of this climate system could have a direct impact on weather patterns, sea level rise, and national security.
