Doshi to Head Research and Technology Development Center at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md., has named Dr. Bharat T. Doshi to head its Research and Technology Development Center and Science and Technology Business Area.

Doshi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, assumes his new positions on June 5. He will lead a department that conducts innovative, advanced research with broad applications across all APL programs, and develops technologies of interest to the Lab's current and potential sponsors in the Department of Defense, NASA and other government agencies.

Doshi is an internationally recognized authority in optical and wireless networking technologies, Internet protocols and architectures, speech technologies and signal processing, and network design and analysis algorithms and tools. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Bell Laboratories Fellow. He has been awarded 40 patents, has published more than 120 technical papers, served on multiple advisory boards to U.S. government agencies and edited several technical journals.

This will be Doshi's second tour at APL, where from 2003 to 2005 he worked in what is now APL's Applied Information Sciences Department, leading the office responsible for developing advanced information-processing and networking concepts. Doshi joined APL after a distinguished 24-year career at Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies, where he served as a senior director in the Advanced Communications Technologies Center and the director of Performance Analysis, among other management positions.

Doshi currently holds the Gupta Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and has served as an assistant professor at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, and earned master's and doctorate degrees in operations research from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

Doshi succeeds Dr. John C. Sommerer, APL's Chief Technology Officer, who last fall became the Lab's first Director of Science and Technology. Dr. Joseph J. Suter, the current acting head of APL's Research and Technology Development Center (RTDC), will resume his assistant department head position upon Doshi's arrival at APL in June.
