Dr. Zhiyong Xia is a principal staff scientist, project manager, and branch chief scientist whose research interests span clean water (including removing PFAS, heavy metals, and microplastics from water as well as harvesting water from air), stimulus-responsive materials, transparent armor, soft robotics, bioinspired and biomimetic materials, and soft sensors. Dr. Xia has 14 U.S. patents and more than 80 technical publications, and he is the recipient of a number of professional awards, including APL Invention of the Year in 2015 and 2021, a best paper from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and the Helios Award from British Petroleum for innovation. Dr. Xia also holds a joint appointment as an associate research professor in Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering.
