We recognize that diversity and inclusion speak not only to attributes such as race, age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation but also to work experiences, personality types, academic disciplines, and interests. Through embracing and managing differences, diverse teams are welcoming and high-performing. They foster creativity, innovation, and collaboration. The inclusive nature of diversity creates an environment where the unique experiences and backgrounds of staff members are the strength of APL.

Management Support

APL executive leadership fully supports the idea that our success demands quality and versatility in our staff. Also fundamental to the success of APL’s envisioned future is an environment that encourages creativity, is rich in diversity of thought, and promotes inclusion of new ideas. This kind of environment can only exist if APL is a place where race, gender, religion, or other such characteristics do not define talent, and where our staff members are distinguished by their diversity.

Inclusion and Diversity Executive Alliance

APL executives and leaders firmly believe that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is a foundational piece of our culture. The Inclusion and Diversity Executive Alliance (IDEA), which includes representatives from across the Laboratory, fosters a vibrant and collaborative culture and leverages the unique dimensions of APL’s workforce to maximize creativity and innovation.

Fostering Unity and Staff Empowerment

Staff members from across the Laboratory, representing all departments and sectors and APL’s diversity-related Affinity Groups and Councils, are engaged in a Lab-wide Employee Resource Group called FUSE (Fostering Unity and Staff Empowerment). They strive to create a culture of excellence that that promotes a positive, diverse, and inclusive culture at the Laboratory, and to facilitate integration of and influence on APL’s executive-level diversity and inclusion strategy, policies, and initiatives.
