THE COVER: The scene depicts a vision of the future in which a network of aircraft, ships, and land missile batteries provides an overland cruise missile defense capability. With this capability, any missile-capable surface combatant can send its missiles well beyond its horizon, under the control of an aircraft, to intercept low-flying cruise missiles attacking land targets at long range. The enabling network is the Cooperative Engagement Capability, which was recently used along with Aegis and surrogate avionics elements (insets) to demonstrate the feasibility of this type of cooperative engagement. The demonstration was known as Mountain Top and is described in the article by Zinger and Krill in this issue. (Cover illustration by Kenneth R. Moscati.)
