An artist's illustration shows the original bir-borne transmitter on an eagle.

This illustration shows the original bird-bone transmitter on an eagle. The transmitter was developed by APL in joint collaboration with the U. S. Army and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Transmitters like these are tracked by the Argos satellite system for the remote tracking and monitoring of animals (see the article by W. S. Seegar et al. in this issue). Satellite tracking supports effective study of the animal's range, breeding, migration, and wintering habitat. (Illustration by Kenneth R. Moscati.)
