Assure, Dissuade, Deter … Through Innovative Submarine Technologies

The 2008 Submarine Technology Symposium (STS 2008) will be held at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) from 13 to 15 May 2008. Jointly sponsored by JHU/APL and the Naval Submarine League, this year’s symposium will provide a classified forum for examining current, emerging, and future technologies that may aid the submarine warfighter and enhance the current and future operational performance of the Submarine Force.  Our Submarine Force continues to be relied upon to provide critical capability in challenging environments, and the operational requirements far exceed their availability.  The sessions that make up this year’s symposium were selected to stimulate thought and elicit technical papers focused on advanced technical concepts that are developing, or that may develop, into systems and processes needed to maintain an undersea advantage in a constantly changing world. 

More detailed descriptions of the sessions are provided below.  Please note that abstracts are being solicited for Sessions 1, 2, 4 and 5 only.  Papers and exhibits will be selected based on technical content and relevancy to the Symposium theme and session topics (note: classified papers containing test data and operational results are preferred).  The technical sessions and Session Chairs for STS 2008 are shown below:

Session 1: SSGN                                                  Chair: CAPT Nils Sjostrom, USN (Ret) (NUWC)

This session will present experimentation results and technology developments with respect to communications, interoperability, war on terrorism, SOF enhancements, and global strike associated with the SSGN platform.

Session 2: Tactical Survival                                                        Chair: Victor Gavin (Team SUB)

This session will address technology challenges associated with the tactical survival of the submarine.  Focus will be on 360-degree tactical awareness and control, detection avoidance, collision avoidance, mine detection and avoidance, littoral stand and fight weaponry, and employing oceanography as a tactical tool.

Session 3: Force Needs                                      Chair: CAPT Ken Perry (COMSUBDEVRON-12)

This session will concentrate on force tactical developments and needs.  The speakers will address the tactical challenges associated with current technologies and highlight capabilities needed to assist with force operations.

Session 4: Technologies for Strategic Flexibility                              Chair: John Biederka (EB)

This session will focus on the next generation SSBN, and technology issues and solutions with regard to global strike, SSBN vulnerability, SLBM follow-on, and secure survivable communications.

Session 5: Future Technologies                                               Chair: David Scheerer (JHU/APL)

This session will address technologies with the potential to revolutionize the submarine’s warfighting capability or concepts of operations.
