Training Material - Model-Based Systems Engineering with the SysML

APL has developed training material on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) with the Object Management Group Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™). MBSE is the formalized application of modeling to support systems requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases. SysML is a general-purpose graphical modeling language for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems that may include hardware, software, information, personnel, procedures, and facilities. In particular, it provides graphical representations with a semantic foundation for modeling system requirements, behavior, structure, and parametric equations that can integrate with a broad range of engineering analysis. The training material comes in two forms as described below including a full semester course and a condensed form intended for a tutorial or short course. Both the course and the tutorial are based substantially on the book "A Practical Guide to SysML" by Freidenthal, Moore, and Steiner.

Course Material

The course material for MBSE with SysML, provides an introduction to how the language can address the needs of the systems engineer. It includes background and motivation, an overview of the diagram types and language concepts, and selected sample artifacts to demonstrate how the language can be used to support MBSE. The course includes: a Course Overview, a MBSE Overview, and a SysML Overview; a section on each of the nine SysML diagram types; and a section on Allocation. These sections were developed to be taught in roughly one-hour segments. The course coverage is generally consistent with the SysML basic feature set that is an expected competency of a Model user as part of the OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional™ (OSCMP™) (refer to http://www.omg.org/ocsmp/).

Tutorial

APL has also developed material for a tutorial in MBSE with SysML. This tutorial covers essentially the same topics as the course described above, but in a condensed version. This material is intended to be delivered as a one-day tutorial or short course.

Tutorial Material – Model-Based Systems Engineering Using the OOSEM

APL has developed training material on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using the Object-Oriented Systems Engineering Method (OOSEM).   OOSEM integrates a top-down systems approach with object-oriented (OO) concepts and modeling techniques.  OOSEM brings to Systems Engineering a technique for leveraging some of the expressiveness of SysML and some of the advantages of OO to help architect more flexible, extensible, and upgradeable systems.  This introductory tutorial provides an overview of OOSEM activities, modeling artifacts, and concepts.  OOSEM uses SysML as the modeling language, and thus this tutorial builds on the SysML course material.  The OOSEM tutorial is based substantially on the book “A Practical Guide to SysML”, by Friedenthal, Moore, and Steiner.

Tutorial Material

The MBSE Using OOSEM tutorial includes:  a Tutorial Overview, a MBSE Overview, and an OOSEM Overview.  It also provides sections on the model-based methods for needs analysis, requirements analysis, logical design, physical design, evaluating alternatives, requirements traceability, and system integration and verification.  The material is intended to be delivered as part of a one-day tutorial or short course.
