NASA's Voyager Probe Edges Closer to Interstellar Space
Graphic of the heliosphere and its boundaries in the general direction of Voyager 1.
“a” is a large-scale illustration depicting the solar wind radial flow inside the termination shock and the expected deflection of the heliosheath flow between the termination shock and the heliopause. The heliopause marks the (theoretical) boundary between the heliosheath plasma flow and the much denser, colder and slower flow of interstellar plasma being deflected around the heliosheath. “V1” is Voyager 1 and “V2” is Voyager 2.
“b” is a scale drawing of the unexpected transition layer that Voyager 1 has encountered within the heliosheath.
