Astronauts Jones and Arnold, Sen. Mikulski to Join Celebration of "Maryland's Place in Space" on June 1

Maryland born-astronauts Ricky Arnold and Tom Jones and Sen. Barbara Mikulski are among those scheduled to speak at "A Salute to Maryland's Place in Space," on June 1 at the Maryland Science Center to help celebrate 50 years of space science and technological innovation in the state.

Hosted by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center — both celebrating a half-century of space science and research in 2009 — the evening's program includes remarks and video highlights of Maryland achievements in science and technology. More than 20 corporations and academic institutions have pledged to sponsor Maryland's Place in Space.

The event caps a weekend of activities, starting with a free, open-to-the-public festival on Saturday, May 30, at the Baltimore Convention Center that showcases the contributions of many science researchers, academic institutions, companies and laboratories within Maryland.

Maryland's Place in Space is open to the media and offers several photo, video and interview opportunities with guests ranging from congressional representatives, local business leaders, local officials and educators.
