Howard County, Md., Public School System Presents "Friends of Education" Award to Johns Hopkins APL

The Board of Education of the Howard County, Md., Public School System has presented its Friends of Education Award to The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), Laurel, Md.

Board Chair Dr. Jane B. Schuchhardt thanked APL for its "immeasurable contributions to this school systems and the children of this county." She said the award was established this year to "increase awareness of the importance of community involvement to the achievement of the school system's mission" and to recognize community members who "make exemplary contributions to public education."

Constance Finney heads APL's community outreach program, which includes educational projects. "We participate in school-sponsored programs for students that reach from elementary schools to colleges and include mentoring and internships, space camps and science fairs, career education, tech magnet programs, and an elementary school newspaper writing course that's on the Web," Finney says. "We also place grant-funded teachers in creative summer internships."
