Celebrating Diversity
The Laboratory supports cultural celebrations. Staff members have organized committees to plan and carry out several month-long celebrations that coincide with the national observances.
Asian American Heritage Club - Fall Festival and Lunar Year Celebration Asian American Heritage Club members hosted their first Lab-wide celebration in October, a Fall Festival representing the many cultures of Asia. More than 400 staff members sampled various Asian foods and enjoyed performances by staff members and their families. The club is open to all APL employees and family members. Black History Month The Black History Month Planning Committee promotes and highlights the achievements of African Americans who have made and are continuing to make a difference in society. The committee volunteers plan and sponsor a wide variety of events at the Laboratory during National Black History Month, based on the national theme. The range of events, designed for all staff, include guest speakers, exhibits, book signings and discussions, film screenings, and performances by guest artists as well as the APL Gospel Choir.
Hispanic Heritage Month The Hispanic Awareness Committee organizes an APL celebration each year coinciding with the National Observance of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). The focus is on increasing awareness of and respect for Hispanic staff members at APL, celebrating Hispanic culture, enhancing cultural diversity, and highlighting critical contributions being made by Hispanics. The celebration offers activities, programs, and materials to APL staff to provide information and stimulate interest in the diversity within the Hispanic culture. The theme was Hispanic-Americans: Enhancing APL’s Technical Capabilities Through Our Diversity.
Women's History Month Women’s History Month was organized to promote a more balanced portrait of American history by including a social-cultural perspective and recognizing the many contributions made by females. But it also serves to frame the aspirations of women today and to celebrate the opportunities and accomplishments of women. The Laboratory celebration of this month-long observance is sponsored by the APL Caucus of the Hopkins Women’s Network. Guest speakers and a graphic display in the main lobby invite all APL staff to learn more about the roles of women and the activities of the Women’s Network.
