Celebrating Diversity at APL’s Winter Reception
Through the contributions of affinity group representatives and other interested staff, APL identified some new and exciting ways to celebrate diversity over the holiday season. A theme of “APL Celebrates!” set the tone and highlighted the rich multicultural, multiracial, and multiethnic dimensions of the APL community.
Because the best celebrations involve a variety of traditions, observances, and festivities, staff members were asked to share and upload photos of events and celebrations that reflect their heritage, regardless of the time of year they occur. Two SharePoint sites were established to allow staff to discuss their own traditions and learn about those of their coworkers. Some images submitted by staff were incorporated into large celebration banners that decorated the walls of the Kossiakoff Center at APL’s Winter Reception. After the reception, the banners were displayed in all APL lobbies alongside traditional decorations.
On a snowy Saturday in December, hundreds of APL staff members brought their families to the Winter Reception to enjoy food, musical entertainment, and a variety of activities for children. Guests walked into a celebration of multiculturalism and were invited to mark their countries of origin on a huge world map. And because food is at the heart of every culture, heritage, or ethnicity, earlier this year, APL staff were invited to submit recipes for small desserts, pastries, cookies, sweets, or breads reflecting their cultural heritage. Twelve of these foods were photographed and featured in the 2010 APL calendar, “Flavors of APL,” which was distributed at the reception.
