APL Minority Initiatives

Minority initiatives include ATLAS, GEM, MESA, and Professional Associations.

ATLAS

APL Technology Leaders Summer Internship Program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Minority Institutions. ATLAS is a unique paid summer engineering program that provides college students who completed their junior year with educational opportunities in research, leadership development, and professional growth.

GEM

The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting minority students who wish to enter graduate schools after obtaining their baccalaureate degrees.

MESA

Maryland MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) stimulates interest in technical careers and providing assistance to prepare students for college majors in technical fields.

Professional Associations

The Maryland Association of Affirmative Action Officers (MAAAO) provides a mechanism for the advancement of equal opportunity throughout Maryland. Dedicated to the promotion of affirmative action in the public and private sectors, MAAAO attempts to foster growth and understanding through sponsorship of educational programs and seminars, and volunteers efforts designed to enlist community support for MAAAO goals. MAAAO provides members with professional development opportunities through monthly meetings and the sharing and dissemination of information to assist in implementing affirmative action goals and resolving issues of conflict.
