For nearly
a decade, APL has been developing an array of personal computer (PC)-based
simulator products to support submarine training. Beginning with the development
of laptop-operated ship control simulators, APL is now developing simulators
for the Trident Strategic Weapon System (SWS), including a missile launcher
simulator.

The Ship Control Simulator
was adapted from a high-fidelity submarine maneuvering and ship system model
that APL developed and has maintained over the course of 30 years for SWS
test and evaluation. To enable independent dive-and-drive training on a
single PC, the model was converted from its mainframe computing environment
and was linked to on-screen replicas of the submarine’s control panels.
The simulator also includes an “intelligent tutor” which warns
the trainee of incorrect system operation. APL has tailored this simulator
for SSN and SSBN applicability in both the US and UK fleets where it is
being used to supplement submerged ship handling training curricula. |

APL’s first PC-based
Strategic Weapon System simulator endeavor was the Trident Launcher Simulator,
which supplements the Trident Training Facility’s team trainer laboratory.
In an electronic classroom of networked PCs, Trident Missile Technicians
can interact with each other and with their launcher system in an extremely
realistic manner during simulated countdowns. A high-fidelity launcher system
model drives the simulator’s interactive displays and its computer-generated
sounds, which replicate those of the actual launcher components. |
