Organization and People

Precision Engagement at APL employs people with appropriate skills, interests, and experience from across APL, and from outside APL through a number of subcontracts, but most of those who support Precision Engagement programs are members of APL's Global Engagement Department (GED).

GED hosts two mission-focused organizations (Precision Engagement and Strategic Systems) and is organized with a branch of technical staff to support each, with each branch consisting of a number of technical groups. The Precision Engagement Systems Branch currently consists of three such groups. There is appropriate coordination and sharing of department resources between Precision Engagement and Strategic Systems, and there is also cooperation with the other APL mission-focused areas and departments.

Currently, more then 200 staff members are working on Precision Engagement programs. There is a broad mix of disciplines, but most of the professional staff are engineers or scientists. There is also a mix of formal education levels ranging from bachelors to masters to Ph.D.s. A number of the staff have previous military experience, primarily in either the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Air Force.

Most of the staff who support Precision Engagement programs have education, skills, experience, and expertise in the following disciplines:
  Physics
Mathematics
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Systems Engineering
Computer Science
Computer Engineering

These staff members engage in the full range of system development, including
  Concept development
Prototyping
System requirements
Software development
System integration
System test and evaluation

Some of the technical specialties of the staff working in Precision Engagement are as follows:
  Sensor data processing and management
Guidance and navigation systems
Mapping and geodesy
Mission planning
Weapon control
Human systems integration
Command and control
Communications
Electronic jamming
Meteorology
Architecture design
Software development
Modeling and Simulation

Precision Engagement programs and GED have a number of permanent field sites and offices intended to better support our sponsors and related organizations. A partial list includes:
Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center, MD
HQ Air Combat Command and Air Force Command, Control, Intelligence,
Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Center at Langley Air Force Base, VA
Counterair Joint Systems Program Office at Eglin Air Force Base, FL
Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center at Fallon, NV
USSTRATCOM at Offutt Air Force Base, NE
National Security Agency at Ft. Meade, MD
Raytheon Systems Company at Tucson, AZ

Other APL departments and programs also have field sites at various locations around the world that we can use, as needed.
