Biomedicine
Decades before technology transfer became a popular way to redirect defense related research, APL was using technologies developed for space and defense systems to solve problems in biomedicine. As a Laboratory dedicated to serving the needs of our nation, we set our course based on those needs. Our critical mission is to make meaningful contributions to warfighter survivability, sustainment, and performance. APL is a ‘hands-on’ organization that directs and participates in all phases of systems development. We bring solid system engineering and integration credentials to the understanding of warfighter and critical civilian operational environments. We apply biotechnology, life sciences, and engineering to prevent and treat trauma by expanding our understanding of the injury environment and improving the engineering in treatment systems. We work at the cutting edge of concept development to advance personnel sustainment and performance. The Biomedicine Business Area forms interdisciplinary project teams to address the critical challenges of our sponsors, drawing from the depth and breadth of expertise around the Laboratory, across the University, and with outside technical organizations.
We utilize our developmental facilities and specialized laboratories, including our 5000 square foot Biomechanics Impact Test Facility where we perform over 100 crash sled tests per year for a number of government and commercial customers.
