The Technical Services Department (TSD) provides in-house services in the broad areas of engineering, design, and fabrication; information development and retrieval; plant operations and maintenance; and construction management.

TSD provides computer-aided design (CAD), development, and fabrication capabilities to produce electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical hardware for satellite, missile, radar, oceanographic, civilian, and biomedical applications. Development of highly reliable, miniaturized electronic devices includes very-large-scale integrated microcircuits, sensors, multichip modules, chip-on-board, and printed wiring board packages. Services include design and fabrication of analog, digital, microwave, and power circuitry. CAD-based rapid prototyping, coupled with a full suite of numerically controlled machine tools, allows the fabrication of the most complex fixtures, structures, and assemblies. Extensive materials analysis and characterization services are provided, along with an advanced composite development facility.

TSD's information operations cover a broad spectrum of products and services associated with the development, retrieval, and display of information. From the Department's modern library, with its electronic access to worldwide information, to the latest in creating digital technical illustrations, capturing digital photographic and video images, publishing in print or on the Web, and supporting multimedia presentations, animations, and exhibits, TSD's Information Services area is a key partner in providing information to and about Laboratory programs.

TSD plant engineering, construction, and maintenance staff not only operate the physical plant but also see to the design and renovation of existing facilities, housekeeping, moving and delivery services, automotive services, ground maintenance, model making, specialty coatings, and management of new construction.
