Mission
The Information Technology Service Department (ITSD) partners with customers across APL to provide IT services and expertise to support APL in achieving its goals in national security, space science and technology and other areas that are synergistic with the University as a whole.

ITSD supports the strategic agendas of the Laboratory in key areas. Some recent and on-going initiatives include:
- Global Information Grid (GIG) test bed– The GIG is the single most important enabler of information/decision superiority and DoD transformation required for future warfare systems. ITSD has designed and implemented the network and server infrastructure that comprise the GIG test bed. and is evolving it to meet customer requirements.
- Enterprise Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing – Implementing a range of content management, collaboration and communication tools to enhance the ability of all APL staff to collaborate both internally and externally.
- Information Assurance Collaboration- Using operational experience to strengthen our knowledge of current trends and techniques for network attacks.
- Quality Management - Developing applications to support new enterprise quality management processes.
Collaborative Environment
Collaboration throughout ITSD, across the enterprise and with peers in other organizations is crucial for an agile and effective IT organization. ITSD staff members collaborate with customers in a variety of ways, including working closely with on application development projects and other services.

Technology Areas
ITSD’s Applications Program develops and supports a variety of applications including financial systems, operational systems, quality systems and planning and management systems with a variety of COTS software and custom-developed applications.
ITSD’s Infrastructure Program implements and supports APL’s networking and telecommunications (voice and data), perimeter and internal security tools, central data center and server systems infrastructure, and desktop services. |
