The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) is a not-for-profit, DoD-Chartered University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) for engineering, research and development.  Established during World War II, the Laboratory made significant contributions to the war effort by developing the radar proximity fuse for use in anti-aircraft gunnery.  Today, with its main campus located in Laurel, Maryland, APL employs over 4000 men & women.  Revenue for FY06 topped $700M (three-quarters of which was National Security related-work).
APL benchmarks its contributions in terms of meeting the nation's critical challenges.  The  Norfolk office supports that goal principally by serving the critical mission needs of the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM), but also by partnering with other Norfolk-area commands and other organizations to help address the critical challenges they face.  By merging the skills and experience of on-site staff with a wider range of skills and experience available at the Lab's main campus, the Norfolk office is integral to the Lab's ability to serve USJFCOM and other Norfolk-area commands.  This combination of on-site and reach-back capabilities offers our Norfolk-area partners thorough and unbiased approaches to analysis and other problem-solving pursuits.
