Technical Activities with the Missile Defense Agency
The Huntsville Field Office is APL’s newest field office, established in support of MDA in its mission to develop, test, and deploy an integrated ballistic missile defense system. Experienced on-site staff provide technical advice, systems engineering leadership, and analyses. These personnel are augmented via reach-back to the full range of skills and competencies available at the Laboratory’s main campus in Laurel, MD. This APL Field Office facility and staff are on-site to ensure APL’s strategic relationship with MDA and its directorates. The Laboratory is committed to helping MDA solve some of its most critical challenges in ballistic missile defense.
APL expertise covers interceptor and propulsion technologies; command, control, and communication; sensors and sensor networks; and end-to-end systems engineering and integration. We also support interceptor test design and mission planning and conduct post-flight analysis of test results and vehicle performance.
APL works closely with several MDA directorates and offices located in Huntsville:
- Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD)
- Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
- Combined Test Force
- Targets and Countermeasures
- Systems Engineering and Integration
APL supports all MDA Knowledge Centers and has provided the Director of the Interceptors Knowledge Center in Huntsville. APL is a principal technical advisor for MDA’s Sensors Directorate and serves as Technical Direction Agent for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program Office.
