Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Celebrates Black History Month

The public is invited to a series of Black History Month events at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. The 2016 theme is "Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories." The calendar includes musical performances as well as talks focusing on education and the contributions of minorities to science and engineering.

Feb. 2, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center: Kickoff Celebration featuring Saxophonist Sharon Thomas, Spoken Word Poet J. Joy Matthews Alford (a.k.a. “Sistah Joy”), the Bishop McNamara High School African Drum Troupe, giveaways, raffles, and soul food.

Feb. 5, 2–3 p.m., Parsons Auditorium: APL Colloquium Speaker — Lt. Gen. Vincent R. Stewart, Director, Defense Intelligence Agency.

Feb. 11, 2–3 p.m. Parsons Auditorium: Clarence Wardell III, Member, White House U.S. Digital Service and Presidential Innovation Fellow, will speak.

Feb. 14, 3 p.m., Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center: 27th Annual Peabody Concert, featuring students of African descent from the Peabody Conservatory, cosponsored by the Columbia Maryland Chapter of The Links, Inc. This event is free.

Feb. 19, 10:30–11:30 a.m., Parsons Auditorium: APL Colloquium Speaker — Wanda M. Austin, President and CEO, The Aerospace Corporation.

Feb. 28, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel, Columbia, MD: Jazz Brunch, featuring Cherise Watson and the Sapphire Exchange Jazz Quartet; honoring Tyrone D. Taborn, Chairman and CEO of Career Communications Group, Inc., and founder of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards. Tickets are $60.
