and Homeland Security
Understanding Terror Networks
biography

Topic: Understanding terror networks and how they are evolving.

Dr. Sageman’s talk is based on his experience as a forensic psychiatrist, a CIA case officer in Afghanistan between 1987–89 where he worked closely with Afghanistan's mujahedin, and an international authority on the social psychology of terrorist groups.  His evidence-based terrorism research used overt data to test conventional wisdom about terrorism. His work has been summarized in the book Understanding Terror Networks in which he examined the psychological profiles of 172 known terrorists to understand the specific social circumstances that lead individuals to enter terror networks.
