Rethinking the Relationship between Economics, Resources, Technology and National / International Security is the third series of professional seminars organized by National Security Analysis Department, Office of Strategic Assessments, Johns Hopkins University / Applied Physics Laboratory

Background
In 2004-05 the Department of Defense’s Office of Force Transformation and the Office of the Secretary of the Navy  sponsored an effort to re-examine the Principles of Warfare. The effort included

Then in 2005-06 a follow-on Seminar Series entitled Rethinking the Future Nature of Competitions &  Conflict looked at fifteen different aspects of the question.  These seminars were videotaped so that video and audio versions could be downloaded from the internet.  The full videos were downloaded over 20,000 times, and the podcasts that allowed subscribers to automatically download the audio files had over 65,000 downloads.

A New Effort
In examining the
Principles Of War and the Future Of Competitions And Conflicts during the two previous seminar series, it became apparent that the conduct of war and conflicts may likely be changing but the nature and causes of war may not. It also has become apparent that the intersection and relationship between economics, resources, technology and national / international security is of chief concern and a critical issue that needs to be examined Examining these relationships requires addressing issues such as the:

  • Implications of Globalization on Governance

  • Future of the UN, NATO, Coalitions and the Nation State

  • Globalization, Organizations, Coalitions and the Nation State

  • Rule Sets and Institutions for Globalization

  • Competition for Resources: Energy and National Security

  • Future Warfighting Capability, i.e. the Future of Transformation

This year's Seminar Series will address the changing character of economics, resources and technology as described above and their relation to one another as well as national security. Potential topics for the Seminars that address many of the issues include:

  • Global Economies and Strife

  • New Rule Sets for Market Economies

  • Future Empires

  • Why Countries Wage War

  • Globalization and its Implications

  • Nuclear Proliferation

  • Future Biological Threats

  • Getting over Oil

  • Implications of a Rising China

  • Future of Russia and the EU

  • Future Military Transformation

  • Role of Religion in Conflicts

  • Causes of Terrorism

  • Morality of Economic Growth

Once again the Seminars will be video taped and posted to the web approximately one week after each event.
